Increase your knowledge in your chosen field and your network of contacts with this effective job search strategy. Talking with someone in the career you are interested in can give you a better sense of the challenges and opportunities and the skills and demands that exist in that field. Informational Interviews can help you identify the path you need to take to achieve success.

Tips to arranging an Informational Interview

  • Start out with the right attitude. Be enthusiastic and optimistic.
  • Call the company and ask for the name of the person for the position you are researching. Be sure to get the correct spelling of name and the right contact information
  • Be sure you know what you are going to say before you call your contact, have your questions ready too
  • Explain the purpose of your call and that you require only 20 minutes of their time. Be clear that you are not looking for a job, but require information in making a career decision
  • If they cannot meet with you perhaps you can ask your questions over the phone
  • Request feedback on your resume, your career plan, how your skills fit the expectations of the profession
  • You want to make a positive impact so present yourself in a friendly professional manner.
  • Follow up and maintain contact. Don’t forget a Thank You letter.
