Why Hire Persons With Disabilities?

The Numbers Make Sense

According to Statistics Canada, more than 6.2 million Canadians—almost 22% of the population—are living with some form of disability. As the population ages, this number will grow. Globally, 15% of people report having a disability totaling around 1 billion people. There are 3.5 million people in Ontario with a disability. More than 40% of this population is over the age of 65. As the population ages, this number will grow.

According to the Business Development Bank of Canada close to 40% of Canadian small and medium-sized businesses are already having difficulty hiring new employees and the situation is getting worse. As our population ages and baby boomers retire, growth in Canada’s labour force is forecast to fall to near zero. We do not expect labour shortages to get better for at least a decade.
2018 study by Accenture in partnership with the American Association of People with Disabilities and Disability:IN reports that businesses that actively seek to employ people with disabilities outperform businesses that do not. Their revenues were 28% higher, net income was two times more, and profit margins were higher by 30%.

In order to maximize its human resources potential, Canada will likely need to look toward groups that are currently under-represented in the labour force. Persons with disabilities represent a potentially significant domestic source of labour that could offset some of the demographic pressures of Canada’s aging labour market, and fill projected skills and labour shortages.


Engaging people with disabilities can be a win-win solution. Many of these individuals want to, and need to, work. Employers, meanwhile, need human resources to support the growth of their businesses as well as that of the Canadian economy.


Employee Loyalty

Two studies, one from the Department of Labor Statistics during the 1940s and a more recent one from the DuPont company concluded that workers with disabilities had a significantly higher performance in the area of safety than their counterparts without disabilities. In other words, employees with disabilities are more aware and conscientious of safety in the workplace.
Many studies have shown that people with disabilities also take less absence days, and that they are more likely to stay on the job longer than non-disabled workers.
